# Protections

> Protections keep alerts quiet when data is stale or noisy: quote age, hold time, cooldown, auto-pause, skipping probable bindings and delisting markets. Every protection can be loosened or switched off.

Protections are the checkboxes under **Protection** in the alert editor. Unticked protections are off. Defaults suit most cases: loosen them if you miss alerts, tighten them if you get noise.

The alert editor: Name, What, When, Protection, Deliver to.

| Protection | Meaning | Range |

| **Quotes of both legs no older than** | Skip when a leg quote is older than this. | 1 s to 60 s |
| **Condition must hold for** | The condition must stay true this long before the alert fires. | 0 to 60 min |
| **Pause between repeats** | Minimum time between two firings of the same rule for the same coin or route. | 0 to 24 h |
| **Auto-pause after N firings per period** | The rule pauses itself as `paused: storm` after N firings within the period. **Resume** restarts it. | N 1 to 1 000, period 1 min to 24 h |
| **Skip markets with an unconfirmed asset binding** | Ignore routes where a market's link to the asset is marked *probable*, see [Glossary](https://docs.spreader.sh/en/glossary.md#probable). | on or off |

A single market rule shows the protections as **Quote no older than**, **Skip if the asset binding is unconfirmed** and **Skip if the market is being delisted**.
