# Sign up

> Create an account in three steps: pick a username, then a password, a passkey or Telegram, then optionally confirm an email. Guest pages are not carried over.

An account raises the limits of a guest and unlocks alerts, scanner sharing and trading. A username is always required. A password is required only when you register with a username and password, otherwise it is optional.

Step 1 of the sign up form.

## Steps

1. Click the **Log in** icon at the right end of the header, then **New here?** under the card. The address is `/signup`.
2. Enter a username and click **Next**. Allowed: 2 to 40 characters, `a` to `z`, digits, dot, dash, underscore. A taken name is reported at once as **This username is taken**.
3. Choose how you will log in:
   * **Password**: type a password of at least 8 characters and click **Sign up**.
   * **Passkey**: click **Passkey** under the `or` divider. Your device asks for a fingerprint, face or PIN. The passkey is stored on the device or in its password manager.
   * **Telegram**: click **Telegram** under the divider and confirm in the Telegram window.
4. If the email step is offered, enter an address and click **Send code**, then type the 6 digit code from the email and click **Continue**. Or click **Skip for now** under the card.

You are signed in immediately after the last step. Your guest pages, favorites and hidden pairs are not carried over, so save the filters you care about again.

## Email as a backup

An email is a way to log in and to reset a forgotten password, not a channel for alerts. After registering with a username and password you see the card **Add a backup way to log in** once, with **Open settings** and **Not now**. Add or remove an email later in `Settings › Account`, see [Account](https://docs.spreader.sh/en/account/overview.md).

## Buttons that stay inactive

Buttons stay disabled while a required field is empty. **Telegram** and **Passkey** are disabled with the hint **Not available yet** when the service has that method switched off, and **Passkey** is also disabled in browsers that do not support passkeys.
