# Opening and closing

> Open and close a pair from the spread page: Semi sends a market order to both legs for a USD size, Manual lets you set order type, price and quantity per leg. Both legs or nothing.

The **Trade** panel sits to the right of the chart on the spread page. The header switches **Open** and **Close**, the row below picks the mode: **Auto**, **Semi**, **Manual**, **Calc**.

The trade panel in Open · Semi.

## Semi

1. Choose **Open › Semi**.
2. Enter **Total for both legs, \$**. The panel shows `Long ≈ … · Short ≈ …` per leg and **Size per leg, coins**.
3. For perpetual legs set **Leverage** and **Margin** (**Cross** or **Isolated**). Some exchanges set these for the whole account, the panel says so.
4. Click **Open spread · N**. The button goes through `sending…`, `waiting for fill…`, `checking the order state…`, then `accepted` or `partial`.

Both legs are sent as market orders at once. The panel refuses to send when a check fails, for example `not enough balance, need N`, `min order N USDT per leg`, `lot step N per leg`, `exchange position limit N`, `spot available only N` or `no live price`. Nothing is sent in that case.

## Manual

**Open › Manual** shows one ticket per leg: **Buy** or **Sell**, **Market** or **Limit**, **Price** for a limit order, **Quantity**. Orders are sent per leg, so use it when you want to work a limit order on one side. An open limit order can be cancelled with **Cancel**, the filled part stays in the position.

## Closing

1. Switch to **Close**.
2. In **Semi** pick the **Close amount**: a share of the position or **whole position**. The panel shows **If closed**: **Out now**, **Result** and fees.
3. Click **Close position**. Legs are closed together. `the remaining N would be below the exchange minimum, close more or all` means the exchange would not accept the remainder.

**Close leg** closes one side only, use it to repair a broken position, see [Positions](https://docs.spreader.sh/en/trading/positions.md).

## Outcomes

| Message | Meaning |
| - | - |
| **The command did not reach the trading server — nothing was sent.** | Try again. |
| **The order state could not be confirmed.** | Check your positions on the exchange before trying again. |
| `result unknown — check on the exchange` | The exchange did not answer in time. |
| **Close was rejected — no position on the exchange?** | The exchange reports no position to close. |

## Balance

The **Balance** tab under the chart shows **Available**, **Wallet** and **Unrealised PnL** per exchange account.
